According to the results of calculating  the Urban Environment Quality Index for 2023,  Murmansk was recognized as comfortable for living among cities with a population of 100 thousand to 1 million people. 

"In general, in the region, we showed an increase of 8 points, compared to the 2022 figures. The Russian Ministry of Construction reported that the Murmansk Region scored 217 points, fulfilling the set plan. Over the year, the increase in cities with a favorable environment in the Kola Arctic is plus 7%," said Deputy Governor of the Murmansk Region - Minister of Urban Development and Improvement Maria Gavrilova.

Every year, the Urban Environment Quality Index is calculated by the Ministry of Construction and Housing and Public Utilities of Russia based on data received from the regions, the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia, the Ministry of Culture of Russia, Rospotrebnadzor, Rosstat and the DOM.RF Development Institute. It evaluates 36 different indicators of the quality of the urban environment, which characterize 6 popular types of urban spaces, such as: housing, public and business and social and leisure infrastructure and adjacent spaces, green areas, embankments, street infrastructure and citywide space.

According to the results of calculating the Index for 2023, 759 Russian cities were recognized as favorable for living, with a planned value of 603 cities. The average value is 200 points with a planned value of 198 points. 

During the announcement of the results of the study, the head of the Ministry of Construction of Russia Irek Fayzullin emphasized that it is the coordinated work of government bodies, local governments, public organizations, businesses and citizens that leads to a positive result.

Earlier it was reported that over the past 6 years, the Urban Environment Quality Index in the Murmansk Region  has increased  from 182 to 209 units.

Activities to improve the quality of the urban environment are carried out within the framework of the federal project "Formation of a Comfortable Urban Environment" of the national project "Housing and Urban Environment".
